You can feel it in the conversation. Short answers. One-word replies. A tone that wasn’t there yesterday.
The short answer: When someone is cold to you for no reason, it’s usually about something going on with them. Stay kind, keep your replies short and calm, and don’t chase them for an explanation. If it keeps happening, set a boundary. Keep your conversations with them short, or say it plainly: “I need you to talk to me with respect.” You can’t control how they act, but you can decide how much it costs you.
I get this a lot. Some people notice when they’ve been short with you, and they care. Some people don’t care at all and act like that’s just how they are. Either way, it stings. Here’s what’s usually going on, and what to actually do about it.
Most of the time, it has more to do with them than with you. Common reasons:
Is it something I did? It’s fair to ask yourself once. Think back. If something comes to mind, ask them simply: “Hey, are we okay?” If nothing comes to mind, it’s probably not yours to fix. You don’t have to solve a problem you didn’t make.
Some people know they’re short with others and don’t see a problem with it. You can’t change them. You can change how you handle it.
Being nice doesn’t mean letting people walk all over you. You can be kind and still:
You only get to control you. So put your energy where it actually makes a difference.
This is exactly why I built the Difficult Person Toolkit. It helps you figure out what to say, plan for the next time you see them, and shake it off after. It’s launching soon.
The cold moment takes ten seconds. The replaying can take all afternoon. A few things that help:
My son is five, and I’m trying to teach him to be kind in the little everyday stuff. Saying hi. Saying thank you. Noticing when someone looks sad.
The line I keep coming back to with him: you never know what someone else is going through, so be kind.
It works for grown-ups too. The world won’t always be kind to you. Be kind anyway.
Next time someone ruins your good mood, try the free Difficult Person Reset. It takes two minutes, and at the end you can save your spot for the Difficult Person Toolkit.
Why would someone suddenly be cold to me?
Usually stress, a bad day, or something going on in their life. If you can’t think of anything you did, it’s most likely not about you.
Should I confront someone who’s being cold to me?
You can check in once, calmly: “Everything okay?” If they brush it off, let it go. If the coldness turns rude or keeps happening, set a clear boundary.
How do I respond to short, rude replies?
Stay calm and keep your own replies short and kind. Don’t match their tone, and don’t over-explain.
Is it okay to keep my replies short too?
Yes. Short and kind is different from cold. You can be brief and still be friendly.
How do I stop overthinking why someone is upset with me?
Tell yourself it was probably about them, move your body for a few seconds, and give yourself a two-minute reset. Then decide you’re done thinking about it.
